Multicoloured Granite Slabs

Grey, Pink and multicoloured granites are widespread throughout Chhotanagpur region. Grey granite with fine to medium grained uniform texture resembling 'Sira-grey' of Himalayan Granite Madras, are located in village Tangar Basli on Mander-Bero road. Extensive deposits of grey granite are located on both eastern and western sides of Tupudana - Khunti road in Ranchi district. Extensive deposits of light pink granite gneiss are available from areas around Garhwa, Bishrampur, Latehar and l Balumath in Palamu district. Out of these the pink-banded-gneiss from Hatai in Bishrampur P.S. has been designated as 'English Teak' by few buyers who visited and saw the sample at STONA '92. This material constitutes almost the whole ridge running from Hatai to Bishrampur for a strike length of about 10 kms. Another attractive deposit is the 'red-paradiso' of Godarma Khurd near Bishrampur which in Geological term is migmatite. However, both these deposits are located in forest areas where sanction of mining lease becomes difficult. Light pink banded verities of granite are also reported from Chutupalu area on Ranchi-Ramgarh road and Shyam Bazar area in Bhagalpur district.

Migmatites of Durnka area are being processed by MIs. Bihar Granite and sold under commercial name of 'Tiger-Skin'. There is widespread occurrences of porphyritic granite which contains while prophyries in and around Balsiring and Bero area in the district of Ranchi which occasionally are traversed by quartz- veins. The material is being processed by a firm at Tupudana and sold in the name of 'splash-grey'. Materials with pink prophyries are surrounded by quartz and as such not likely to chip-off in course of processing. Such materials can be extracted in form of dimensional blocks to yield large panels and soldin the name of 'Sawan-Rose'.

Besides above materials, the Banded Haematite Jasper (BHJ) of Gua Barajamda areas, District Singhbhum, deserves special attention. After cutting and polishing, this yields ornamental stone of unusual but striking appearance. This had attracted the attention of many indigenous and foreign buyers in STONA'92. Similar material from Orissa has been processed in Manali Processing unit of Tamil Nadu Mineral Development Corporation to be used in the Indira Gandhi Memorial at Delhi.
