Black Granite Slabs
The basic and ultrabasic rocks like dolerite, gabbro, anorthosite, norite, amphibolite, etc. in commercial parlance, are termed ad black-granite. They occur as intrusives in form of lenses and bands. The basic rocks mainly comprise the dolerite dykes intruding the Chhotanagpur Granite Gneiss terrain. A series of dykes having roughly NW-SE trend, occur intermittently for a strike length of about 100 kms from Kodarma to Giridih. Deposits of similar characteristics are also found around Deoghar, Jamtara, Chorkatta and Hansdiha areas in Santhal Parganas district. Other notable occurrences of dolerite dykes are those of Talpara, Bishrampur, Khori and Chhatterpur areas of Palamau; Ranka, Ramuna and Nagar Untari areas of Garhwa as well as Jingi area of Lohardaga district. Materials from these deposits can be grouped as medium black which at places contain moles consisting of segregation of darker minerals. The dolerite dykes of the areas around Talpara in Chainpur P.S. occur almost on ground level, are thin varying in thickness - from 10m to 30 m and extending along strike from 300 m to 500 m. They are generally free from defects. Deposits of Khori area are quite extensive and occur in form of ridges extending for more than 5 kms. The deposits of Munkeri and Teliadih in P.S. Chhattarpur on account of their design, have been termed as \'midnight black\' and are being processed at Daltonganj by M/s. Madgul Minerals.
Ultra basic rocks occur extensively in Roro, Ramla, Jojohata and Kimsi areas located SW of Chaibasa, and around Hat Gamaria in the southern part of West Singhbhum. Dunite, Peridotite and Saxonite of these areas are mostly altered and as such are unfit for taking good polish. However, gabbro, anorthosite and pyroxenite can yield desired dimensional blocks for polishing.
Greenish black ortho amphibolite which fall under the category of Metabasic rocks occur in form of bands abundantly in Chhotanagpur Granite Gneiss terrain, specially in Munger, Jamlli, Banka and Santhal Parganas. This is a common rock in Bihar Mica belt also.
The newer dolerites of Singhbhum occur in form of a number of dykes extending for miles together. However, they are not exactly black rather they resemble the Hassan green of Karnataka. They are tinted with evenly distributed white spots of felspar. Because of the presence of frequent hair cracks, blocks of dimensional size will not be available from surface exposures till the situation improves at depth.

"Oh, man," is the response I get, followed by a long deep sigh, when I ask Aba at New York City´s Janovic Plaza how someone might go about getting stains out of marble.

Slate characteristics vary with source. Domestic is typically black, green or mottled (Pennsylvania) and is relatively dense. Many imported slates are available today with wide ranging physical characteristics and overall suitability.
